Frankfurt's city centre is only about 12 km from the airport — one of the shortest airport-to-city distances in Europe. Still, the options differ noticeably.
S-Bahn: The Cheapest
Lines S8 and S9 run from the regional station beneath Terminal 1 to the Hauptbahnhof in around 15 minutes (about €6.30). Landing at Terminal 3? Take the 8-minute SkyLine ride first. Downsides: stairs, rush-hour crowds, and a thinned-out timetable late at night.
Taxi: Flexible, but Metered
Taxi ranks sit outside both terminals. Expect €35–€55 to the centre depending on traffic — you find out the exact number at the destination. After big arrival waves, the queue can be long.
Private Transfer: Predictable and Door-to-Door
A pre-booked transfer costs from €45 at a fixed price and includes a meet-and-greet in the arrivals hall with a name board, flight tracking, and help with luggage. For early departures or late landings — when the S-Bahn barely runs — it is practically unbeatable.
Twelve kilometres are not a question of distance, but of the hour, the luggage, and your nerves.
Our Recommendation
Light luggage, daytime arrival, destination near a station: take the S-Bahn. Family, suitcases, a business appointment, or odd hours: pre-book a fixed-price transfer. For the full arrival walkthrough, see our Frankfurt Airport guide.
