Frankfurt is one of Europe's most pet-experienced airports, with a dedicated animal facility and clear procedures. But entry rules are strict and worth getting right well before you fly. Here's what to know about travelling with a pet through FRA — and getting them onward in comfort.
EU Pet Entry Rules (Get These Right First)
To bring a dog, cat or ferret into Germany you'll generally need: a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination, and the right paperwork — an EU pet passport (for EU-resident pets) or an EU animal health certificate for arrivals from outside the EU. Some countries require a rabies antibody titre test. Requirements vary by country of origin, so check the official rules early — vaccination timing rules mean this can't be left to the last minute.
The Frankfurt Animal Lounge
FRA has a large, specialised Animal Lounge that handles pets travelling as cargo and animals in transit, with veterinary care on site. If your pet flies in the hold or as cargo, this is where they're received and cleared. Pets travelling in the cabin come through with you.
On Arrival
A nervous animal after a flight needs calm and space — not a crowded train platform.
However your pet arrives, the priority is a quick, calm onward journey. After a flight, animals are often anxious; a private vehicle lets them settle with you rather than facing busy public transport, stairs and crowds.
Pet-Friendly Transfers
Tell us you're travelling with a pet when you book, and we'll arrange a suitable vehicle with room for a carrier or a settled dog and your luggage — our Business Van is ideal for a crate plus bags. Bring a carrier or travel mat, water, and anything that comforts them; let the driver know of any special handling.
Tips for a Smooth Pet Trip
- Confirm import rules for your exact route months ahead — vaccination windows matter.
- Carry all documents (passport/health certificate, vaccination records) in hand luggage.
- Keep a carrier, lead, water and a familiar blanket accessible.
- Pre-book a pet-friendly transfer so onward travel is settled before you land.
Then Home or Onward
