Frankfurt is one of Europe's biggest hubs — which means plenty of travellers are stuck here for hours between flights. The good news: depending on your time budget, there are far better options than a gate chair.
2–3 Hours: Stay in the Terminal
On short stops, leaving the security area is not worth it. Instead use: lounges (the Lufthansa lounges in T1, modern relaxation zones in T3), showers, free Wi-Fi, and the restaurants beyond security. If you change terminals (T1 ↔ T3), factor in the ~8-minute SkyLine ride plus re-screening.
4–5 Hours: Frankfurt City Centre
The city is only 12 km away. With a private transfer (15–25 minutes each way), you get a good 2 hours for the Römerberg, the Kaiserdom, the Main riverbank, or a coffee in the Bahnhofsviertel. Alternatively, the S-Bahn (S8/S9) reaches the Hauptbahnhof in around 15 minutes. Leave your bags at the airport luggage storage.
6–8 Hours: Heidelberg or the Rhine Valley
From around 6 hours, a real excursion becomes realistic: the Heidelberg Castle day trip (castle, Old Bridge, old town) is 55–75 minutes away; a shortened Rheingau tour with Rüdesheim is also doable. With a private driver who waits and brings you back on time, the risk is manageable — we always plan the return with a buffer for security. More options are listed under day trips from Frankfurt.
How Much Time to Allow for Your Next Flight?
- Schengen connection: back at the terminal at least 90 minutes before departure
- Non-Schengen/intercontinental: at least 2 hours, including passport control
- Luggage: through-checked bags stay in the system — you only need your boarding pass
Good to Know
Citizens of many countries can use the transit area without a Schengen visa; leaving the airport may require one — check before you travel. With FrankfurtRide you can book layover tours with a fixed return time; if your inbound flight is delayed, the tour shifts automatically.
