German Christmas markets are a famous export — but the original is best experienced between the Rhine, Main, and Odenwald. From Frankfurt Airport, several of the loveliest markets lie within easy day-tour reach.
The Season's Highlights
- Frankfurt Römerberg: one of Germany's oldest markets (since 1393), set against half-timbered façades.
- Rüdesheim: the "Christmas Market of Nations" in the Drosselgasse — with mulled wine from local Riesling.
- Michelstadt in the Odenwald: perhaps the region's most atmospheric market, around the 1484 town hall.
- Mainz: the market beneath the thousand-year-old cathedral.
Mulled wine tastes best when nobody in the group has to drive.
The Private Advent Tour
The Rhine Christmas Markets private tour (from €72) combines 2–3 markets in an afternoon and evening — your driver waits while you browse and brings everyone back safely. By day, it pairs well with the Rüdesheim tour.
Practical Notes
Markets run roughly from 24 November to 23 December; Advent weekends are the most atmospheric (and busiest) — go Tuesday to Thursday if you can. Bring warm shoes: mulled wine only warms from the inside. All winter tours: Rhine Valley tours.
