If you have seen a photo of Alsace that looked too pretty to be real — pastel half-timbered houses leaning over a flower-lined canal — it was almost certainly Colmar. Just across the French border, it makes a magical day out from Frankfurt, and with a private driver you skip the border-region train changes entirely.
How Far Is Colmar from Frankfurt?
Colmar is roughly 190 km from Frankfurt, mostly down the A5 to the border and across into Alsace — about 2 hours each way. As a day trip it is comfortably doable: leave mid-morning, have the afternoon and early evening in Alsace, and be back the same night. Our day-trip pricing covers the round trip, with the driver waiting while you explore.
Little Venice and the Old Town
Start in the Petite Venise (Little Venice) quarter, where the Lauch river threads between timber-framed houses draped in geraniums. From there wander the pedestrian old town — the Maison Pfister, the covered market hall, and the Unterlinden Museum with Grünewald's extraordinary Isenheim Altarpiece. Colmar is compact, so a single afternoon shows you a great deal on foot.
The Alsace Wine Route
Colmar is the capital of the Alsace wine route, and some of its prettiest villages sit minutes away. With a private car you can add a stop in Riquewihr or Eguisheim — ramparts, cobbles, and Riesling and Gewürztraminer tasted at the source — without timetables. Tell the driver your plan and build the wine villages into the day.
Two hours from Frankfurt, the architecture turns to gingerbread and the wine turns to Gewürztraminer — and someone else does the driving home.
Why a Private Transfer Works Best
Public transport to Colmar from Frankfurt means train changes and a border crossing, and it strands you in the city centre with no easy way to reach the wine villages. A private day-trip transfer is door-to-door, waits for you, and lets you combine Colmar with the vineyards or with Strasbourg on the way. See pricing and details on the Colmar & Alsace day trip page.
Pair It with Strasbourg
Strasbourg, the grand Alsatian capital with its soaring cathedral and the canals of La Petite France, sits on the way back north. Many visitors combine the two on a longer day — see our Strasbourg & Alsace guide for how that works.
Practical Tips
- Bring ID: it is an international trip across the German–French border, even though there are no routine checks.
- Wear good shoes: Colmar's old town is cobbled and best seen on foot.
- Go shoulder-season: spring and early autumn are gorgeous; December adds one of Alsace's loveliest Christmas markets.
- Plan the wine stops: tell your driver in advance which villages you want so the day flows.
Our Recommendation
Colmar rewards a relaxed pace, and a private day trip gives you exactly that — no changes, no parking, no rush for the last train. Add a wine village or two and it becomes one of the best days out from Frankfurt. Browse all our trips on the destinations page, or book your Colmar day trip below.
