Frankfurt is made for a single well-planned day. The sights cluster around the river Main, so you can walk most of it. Whether you have a free day in the city or a long layover from FRA, here is an itinerary that hits the highlights at a civilised pace.
Morning: The Römer and the Old Town
Begin at the Römerberg, Frankfurt's medieval heart, with the gabled Römer city hall and the rebuilt Ostzeile houses. Walk through the New Old Town to the Kaiserdom (cathedral) and climb the tower for a first view. This compact area takes a relaxed couple of hours.
Late Morning: The River and Museums
Cross the Eiserner Steg footbridge to the south bank and the Museumsufer — Frankfurt's remarkable row of museums along the water. Even if you only enter one (the Städel for art is the classic choice), the riverside walk itself is a highlight.
Lunch: Kleinmarkthalle
Head to the Kleinmarkthalle, the indoor market, for lunch among the stalls — local sausages, cheese, and the famous Green Sauce. It is where Frankfurters actually eat, not a tourist trap.
Afternoon: Skyline and Shopping
Walk the Zeil, the main shopping street, then go up for the skyline view. The Main Tower has a public observation deck — the only skyscraper in the banking district that does — for a 200-metre panorama over the city and the Taunus hills beyond.
Evening: Apple Wine in Sachsenhausen
End where the locals do: a ribbed glass of tart Apfelwein in a Sachsenhausen tavern, with Schnitzel and Grüne Soße.
Cross back to Alt-Sachsenhausen for the cobbled lanes of apple-wine taverns. It is the perfect, unhurried way to close a day in Frankfurt.
Doing It on a Layover
With a layover of around six hours or more, this works beautifully. A private transfer from the airport to the Römer takes about 20–30 minutes each way, and your driver can collect you in time for your flight — no train timetables to watch. See our layover guide and our routes for details.
