Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is Germany's largest airport and one of Europe's busiest hubs. 2026 was a landmark year: the brand-new Terminal 3 opened and Terminal 2 closed for a major rebuild. If you are flying through FRA, here is the complete, current picture.
The Big 2026 Change: Terminal 3 Is Open
The new Terminal 3 was inaugurated on 22 April 2026 and became fully operational on 9 June 2026. It has capacity for around 19 million passengers a year, with 21 modern security lanes using CT scanners — so you no longer need to remove liquids or electronics from your bag. It sits at the southern end of the airfield, opposite Terminals 1 and 2.
Terminal 2 Has Closed
As of 9 June 2026, Terminal 2 closed to passengers for a roughly €1.5 billion refurbishment, with reopening planned for the mid-2030s. All of its airlines have moved to Terminal 3. If older guides send you to Terminal 2, ignore them — check your airline's current terminal before you travel.
Which Terminal Will I Use?
- Terminal 1: Lufthansa and most Star Alliance partners.
- Terminal 3: the former Terminal 2 airlines — Air France, KLM, Delta, Emirates, Iberia, easyJet, Finnair, Korean Air and many more non-Star-Alliance carriers.
- Terminal 2: closed.
Getting Between Terminals
Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 are at opposite ends of the airport, linked by the free SkyLine elevated train, which runs every couple of minutes with a ride of up to about 10 minutes. There is also a bus link. If you have a connection that changes terminals, allow extra time — our layover guide has details.
Trains, Transfers and Taxis
FRA has two stations: a regional station (S-Bahn S8/S9 to the city in ~15 minutes) and a long-distance station (ICE trains across Germany), both at Terminal 1. Taxis and the official rank are outside arrivals. For door-to-door travel with a name-board meet and a fixed price, a pre-booked transfer from FrankfurtRide is the simplest option — see all routes.
Arrivals Tips
Arriving long-haul into Terminal 3 is now a smoother experience thanks to modern passport e-gates and CT security. Confirm your terminal, agree your onward ride before you land, and you turn the biggest variable of any trip — the airport — into the easy part.
