Summer is when Frankfurt steps outside. The riverbanks fill with festivals, the squares host open-air feasts, and the apple-wine flows in beer-garden style. Here are the season's highlights and how to make the most of them.
Museumsuferfest
The biggest of them all: the Museumsuferfest in late August turns both banks of the Main into a vast cultural festival, with the museums, stages, food stalls and crowds of well over a million. It is one of Europe's largest cultural festivals — and Frankfurt at its liveliest.
Mainfest and Wäldchestag
- Mainfest: a traditional riverside funfair in summer, one of the city's oldest folk festivals.
- Wäldchestag: Frankfurt's quirky "forest day" in the city woods, a much-loved local tradition in early summer.
Opernplatzfest and Open-Air Dining
The elegant Opernplatzfest brings food and wine stalls to the square in front of the Alte Oper, while open-air bars and apple-wine gardens across Sachsenhausen and Bornheim run all season.
Sport and the Outdoors
In summer the best of Frankfurt is outdoors — by the river, in the parks, and on the day trips the long evenings make possible.
Long summer days are also ideal for day trips — the Rhine, the wine country and Heidelberg are at their best. See our day trips for chauffeured ideas.
Getting Around in Summer
Festivals mean crowds and busy transport, especially along the river. For groups, evenings out or trips to and from the airport during festival weekends, a pre-booked transfer keeps things simple. Dates shift year to year, so check the city's event calendar for 2026. See routes and pricing.
