If your phone supports eSIM (most recent iPhones and Android flagships do), this is the easiest route: buy a Germany or Europe eSIM online before you travel, or connect to the free airport WiFi on arrival and activate one in minutes. No queue, no shop, no swapping out your home SIM. You land already connected.
Buying a Physical SIM at FRA
The major German networks — Telekom, Vodafone, O2 and resellers like Lebara — have shops in the terminals, typically open from early morning to late evening (around 06:00–22:00). Prepaid tourist data packages are easy to find. Staff speak English and will help you set it up.
The Registration Rule (Don't Get Caught Out)
German prepaid SIMs must be identity-verified — bring your passport, or you can't activate the card.
By law, prepaid SIMs require registration with photo ID. In-store staff handle it on the spot with your passport. This is exactly why many travellers prefer an eSIM bought in advance — the verification is done online before you fly.
Already Have an EU SIM?
Thanks to "roam like at home" rules, an existing SIM from any EU country works in Germany at no extra cost within your plan's fair-use limits. UK and other non-EU travellers should check roaming charges — a local eSIM is often far cheaper than roaming.
