Nuremberg (Nürnberg) is the capital of Franconia and one of the most-visited cities in Bavaria after Munich. Whether you are heading there for the famous Christkindlesmarkt, a toy-fair appointment, or the medieval Old Town, this guide compares every way to get there from Frankfurt Airport.
Distance and Journey Time
Frankfurt Airport (FRA) to Nuremberg city centre is roughly 225 km, almost entirely on the A3 motorway via Würzburg. By car or private transfer the drive takes about 2 hours 20 minutes in normal conditions. The A3 carries heavy freight traffic, so the section around Würzburg can slow at peak times — a fixed-price transfer absorbs that risk for you.
Option 1: Private Transfer (FrankfurtRide)
For door-to-door comfort across a longer route, a private transfer is hard to beat. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board, loads the luggage, and drives straight to your hotel, the Messe Nürnberg fairgrounds, or any private address. Full route details and live pricing are on the Frankfurt Airport to Nuremberg transfer page.
One car, one price, one driver who waits if your flight is late — €360 to Nuremberg whatever the A3 does.
- Journey time: about 2h 20m door-to-door
- Cost: fixed price from €360 for up to 3 passengers
- Luggage: included, no per-bag charge
- Booking: instant online, available 24/7
Option 2: ICE Train
Frankfurt Airport's long-distance station (Fernbahnhof, signposted in Terminal 1) has frequent ICE departures. Most connections to Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof take around 2 hours, occasionally with one change in Frankfurt or Würzburg. From the station you still need a taxi or tram to your final address.
- Journey time: about 2h station-to-station, plus onward travel
- Cost: €30–€95 depending on how far ahead you book
- Best for: solo travellers with light luggage heading near the Hauptbahnhof
Option 3: Taxi
A metered taxi over 225 km is the most expensive option by far — easily €350–€450 with no fixed quote and the meter still running in any jam. For a journey this long, a pre-agreed transfer price is almost always the smarter call.
What to Do in Nuremberg
Give yourself time for the Kaiserburg castle, the Hauptmarkt with its golden Schöner Brunnen fountain, and the sobering Documentation Centre at the former Nazi rally grounds. In December the whole Old Town turns into one of Germany's oldest Christmas markets. If you are touring Franconia, the Würzburg transfer covers the wine-country city you pass on the way.
Our Recommendation
Travelling as a couple, a family, or with conference luggage? The private transfer wins on comfort and predictability. Travelling solo and light, with your hotel near the station? The ICE is excellent value. Either way, see all our routes on the destinations page, or book your Nuremberg transfer below.
