Security screening is the biggest uncertainty in any departure plan. The good news for 2026: with the new CT lanes in Terminal 3, it is significantly faster — if you know the peak hours.
The New CT Scanners
Terminal 3 is fully equipped with 21 CT scanner lanes: liquids (up to 2 litres!) and electronics stay in your hand luggage — the unpacking ballet is gone. Terminal 1 also runs modern lanes, but not everywhere yet — older lanes there still apply the 100 ml rules.
The fastest queue is the one where nobody has to unpack a laptop.
When It Gets Busy
- Monday, 6–9 am: the business travel wave — the fullest time of the week.
- Friday afternoons & holiday starts: leisure waves, especially around Hessian school holidays.
- Daily 10 am–1 pm: the intercontinental departure wave in T1.
- Usually relaxed: Tuesday to Thursday after 7 pm.
How Much Time to Allow?
Schengen flights: at the terminal 2 hours before departure. Intercontinental or peak hours: 2.5 to 3 hours. The Frankfurt Airport app shows live wait times.
Getting Through Faster
- Jacket off, pockets empty, belt off — before you reach the tray.
- In T1, glance at neighbouring checkpoints — queues are often unevenly spread.
- Being on time at the terminal starts with being on time on the road: a pre-booked transfer factors in traffic and rush hour. Everything else is in the Frankfurt Airport guide.
