If you are planning a trip to Germany and you currently travel visa-free — for example from the US, UK, Canada, Australia or dozens of other countries — there is a new step coming to your pre-trip checklist: ETIAS, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. Here is what it is, when it starts, and what it means for arriving at Frankfurt Airport.
What Is ETIAS?
ETIAS is an online travel authorisation, not a visa. It is linked to your passport and pre-screens visa-exempt travellers before they enter the Schengen area, which includes Germany. Think of it like the US ESTA or the UK ETA: a quick online form and a small fee, approved before you fly.
When Does It Start?
ETIAS is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026, with a transitional grace period after that. In practice it becomes effectively required for most travellers around 2027. Dates have shifted before, so check the official EU site close to your trip — but it is wise to factor it in for any 2027 travel planning now.
Who Needs It?
ETIAS applies to nationals of visa-exempt non-EU countries — the travellers who today enter Germany with just a passport. If you already need a Schengen visa, nothing changes (you keep using the visa). EU/EEA citizens do not need ETIAS.
Cost and Validity
- Fee: €20 per application (reduced or waived for some ages — typically under 18 and over 70).
- Validity: up to three years, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first.
- Trips: covers multiple short stays during its validity, within the Schengen 90/180-day limit.
How to Apply
You apply online through the official ETIAS website or app: enter passport and travel details, answer a few background questions, and pay. Most approvals are expected within minutes to a few days, so apply before you book non-refundable travel, and never through unofficial "ETIAS" sites that overcharge.
One rule of thumb: if a website charges far more than €20 or pressures you, it is not the official ETIAS service.
What It Means at Frankfurt Airport
ETIAS is checked together with your passport on entry, so a valid authorisation simply means a smooth arrival at FRA. It pairs with the new EES biometric border system, and once you are through, your pre-booked FrankfurtRide driver is waiting in arrivals to take you onward. Sort the paperwork early and the airport becomes the easy part.
Quick Checklist
- Check whether your nationality is visa-exempt (then ETIAS applies to you).
- Apply online via the official site, well before departure.
- Carry the same passport you applied with.
- Confirm the latest start date close to your travel dates.
